Statement

Paper is an extension of my physical and spiritual self. With analog collage as my visual medium, my work seeks to explore the beauties and complexities of being an imaginative Black woman who chose to remain in rural Georgia to grow, thrive and create. As a sixth-generation descendant of farmers, I grew up on and helped cultivate the very land that has fed and sustained my family and extended community for over 100 years. My fascination with the natural world, both above and below, kept me curious and served as a means for me to escape and connect with places both seen and unseen with the naked eye.
With paper, scissors and glue, I build words in which Black people exist freely within the land, among the stars and everywhere in between. I rely heavily on archival images of my people and surround them with vibrant colors and details as a way to explore the juxtaposition of the past, present and future existing simultaneously–a visual representation of how ancestral stories were passed down to me, how my life will contribute to those stories, and how they will carry on after I am gone.
